Jaeyana Beuraheng told her eight children she accidentally boarded a bus bound for Bangkok instead of Malaysia, and once there she boarded a second incorrect bus because she could not read or speak Thai or English, The Times of London reported Wednesday.

Beuraheng, who speaks only the Yawi dialect used by Muslims in southern Thailand, said the noise and traffic of the big city confused and disoriented her, leading her to board the second wrong bus to Chiang Mai, near the border with Burma.

The woman said she spent five years begging on the street in the city and was often mistaken for a member of a hill tribe because of her dark skin tone.

She was arrested in 1987 on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant and was sent to a social services hostel when authorities were unable to determine her origins.

However, last month, three students from her home village arrived at the hostel for training, and they were able to communicate with Beuraheng and help her find her way home.

Edit: This isn't about her being unable to understand Thai or English, it's the 25 years part. Even Ulysses wasn't gone for that long (just 10 years) and that was "a long time being 'lost.'"

I don't know too many people that, if they accidentally boarded a plane and ended up in Russia instead of California would go ahead and get on another plane that was bound for some land that could only be determined if you knew Russian. What went through her mind "Oh, whatever, I'll just get on this train, it's probably going where I want it to."

I'm not saying she could have just got onto another train and gone somewhere else. Theirs always other options you can take. Even if you can't speak or read the language. And yeah I don't blame her for being confused by all the traffic and noise and stuff. But it the entire period of 25 years. I mean damn, it seems like she gave up trying to find her way home. Over time she should have at least meet someone that spoke the same language. Find a police officer or something and try to point out something with your hands or some crap. I'm not disagreeing with you either, but some people just seem to have a lot more trouble doing this kind of stuff.

Edit- And she had 8 kids, I mean you have to try and get back for them at least. So you just tell your kids "Sorry I got lost for 25 years and didn't know how to get back."

unbelievable, laugh a bit, feel kinda sad, that there are people in this world that would get lost for 25 years, because they can't read.

same thing in my country, sad that lots of children of a certain race are still found working, roaming the streets at an age where they are "suppose" to be happily having fun learning in school, these children will most probably grow up illiterate and becomes thugs (some may make it, maybe 1%, who knows). But this news kinda sends chill down my spine that people would have so little compassion for someone in an illiterate situation.
